Countless parents and students have asked me to read their writing or help a student to begin the writing process. My purpose in creating College Essay Coach is to develop and share a structural framework to assist in writing the college essay. The goal is for the student to feel accomplishment with each step taken. Within four weeks of one-on-one meetings and homework editing, the student will develop and write a personal and impactful essay that reflects their ideas, thought process and future interests. The college essay writing process will help the student with the SAT and ACT writing sections and future college writing assignments.
With college costs increasingly becoming one of the most expensive investments (sometimes even more than a house), it is important for the student’s essay to break through the clutter and differentiate the student from other applicants. I have developed a four week, step-by-step process that helps to effectively manage the creative development of the writing process.
The four week process includes weekly two-hour meetings at the student’s home or at my office. For our first meeting, the student will bring a rough draft or an outline of their college essay. This will allow us to benchmark at each stage of the writing process how the student’s essay has progressed. Our discussions to evolve the writing process will include brainstorming, word exercises, and organization techniques.
Quotation Introduction: Many writers are tempted to start their essay with a quote. You should try to resist this temptation, as most quotes will look forced. Admissions officers will be turned off if it is apparent that you searched through a book of famous quotes and came up with a quote from some famous philosopher about whom you know nothing. The quotation introduction is most effective when the quote you choose is unusual, funny, or obscure, not too long, and from those to whom you are closest. Choose a quote with a meaning you plan to reveal to the reader as the essay progresses. The admissions committee is interested in how you respond to the quote and what that response says about you.
3. Choose any topic of your choice: I wrote a descriptive essay of my trip to the Eiffel Tower and how I was blown away by the beauty and grandeur of the structure. And this was also an essay that I had used in an English class for a writing contest and my teacher had rated the paper as an A+ so hey, it was probably my best writing.
This section contains an overview of applying to undergraduate institutions, words of advice from undergraduate admissions officials from all over the US, and information on writing effective application essays. The graduate school application section contains resources to help you through the process of applying to graduate school.
Most college admission officers agree that a student’s character is the most difficult thing to measure on the application. College essays are the place for students to reveal their personal stories in an authentic, engaging and sincere way . In addition to what has already been mentioned, it’s important to read the essay prompts carefully and understand the intent of the question.
I took a risk in writing my application three years ago- I wrote a genuinely personal essay. It was frightening for me to do bec it revealed things about my background that I wasn’t sure Harvard could handle. But it was a risk that paid off.
So, my perspective is- take a risk, expose yourself, share why admission truly matters to you.

Overarching Societal Statements: Rather than using a traditional thesis statement you can put forth a societal observation that ties into the theme of your essay. This can be very effective if the statement is unique and gives a glimpse into how you view the world. It can be detrimental if your statement is debatable or unclear. Make sure that if you use this form of introduction that no admissions office will take offense to it.
Says: Multicultural awareness is a key aspect of fitting in well at a university, and admissions officers are very aware of this. Thus, it is an excellent idea to mention how you expanded your cultural sensitivity. Beginning the essay by admitting that you were once less tolerant is a compelling way to demonstrate just how much you have grown as a person.
