A synthesis essay is quite different from regular types of essays. In the synthesis essay you are supposed to write your interpretation of things that you have studied, seen or felt. It could be from two or more sources and you are required to provide your understanding of the things you have studied, felt or witnessed, the source of which can be from a varied range of other sources.
The user research sessions will produce pages of verbal transcript, hundreds of pictures, and dozens of artifact examples. Because of the complexity of comprehending so much data at once, the designer will frequently turn to a large sheet of paper and a blank wall in order to "map it all out." Several hours later, the sheet of paper will be covered with what to a newcomer appears to be a mess—yet the designer has made substantial progress, and the mess actually represents the deep and meaningful sensemaking that drives innovation. The designer will have identified themes, and will better understand the problem he or she is trying to solve; the designer will have discovered "the whole," as described by Daniel Fallman: "Fieldwork, theory, and evaluation data provide systematic input to this process, but do not by themselves provide the necessary whole. For the latter, there is only design."
Synthesis essays appear to be a bit difficult to write as combining of the summaries from two or more sources should be logical and have at least some meaning in it. The whole idea behind the synthesis essay is to present the ideas gathered from multiple sources in one single source in a coherent and easily recognizable manner. Students must have the ability to assimilate as much information as possible for writing the synthesis essay. In addition to assimilatory powers, students must be able to recall all they have assimilated and they should also have that much organizational ability so that the recalled information is put in a coherent and organized way.

Developing a Thesis
You will develop a thesis/argumentative claim about the topic you have chosen, and you will proceed to defend your claim while engaging with your three texts.
Your claim can articulate a specific stance on the issue you have chosen, or it can make an assertion about how the rhetorical composition of these three texts affects their engagement with that issue.
Engaging with your Texts
You should not simply agree or disagree with your texts - you need to interact with them.
use (you are not required to use sources outside the course textbook).

In writing the synthesis paper, you need to have a summary. This is one of the best ways to organize the paper with related sources after the other. The summary will be very useful in handling other methods involved.
Select a text (and you can be creative when it comes to the genre and medium) that engages, in some way, with your topic.
3) Write a short (one paragraph) proposal that names the three texts you will use for this paper and articulates a preliminary thesis statement.
The skills you have while enrolled in this course are essential in composing your very own synthesis. Before you are in a position to draw relationships between 2 or more sources, you need to fully understand well what those sources say; you need to be able to come up with a summary of all of those sources. It will be of help to you if you can give at least part of the summaries of those sources in your essay. You also need to go far from the summary to be able to create judgments; this must be based on your critical reading of the sources.
