At the University of Tennessee Center for Advanced Medical Simulation (UTCAMS), physicians, students, and other members of the healthcare team attain not only improvement in individual skills, but also learn and practice team skills that are essential for patient safety. This type of multi-faceted, orchestrated training improves critical thinking, decision making, and clinical techniques - all without imparting risk to a real patient. The National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) is a licensing exam for nurses that is held in every state and is governed by each state’s board of nursing. The NCLEX is required for licensure and practice as a nurse. There are two types of tests, the NCLEX-PN, which licenses practical nurses, and the NCLEX-RN, which provides licensure for registered nurses. Nursing students typically take the NCLEX following graduation from nursing school.
The TEAS is administered by appointment and you must register to find out the location and the time of the exam. You can prepare for this test by working through a study guide that may review pertinent information and provide sample questions. If you know someone else applying to the program, you could try to study together to solidify the concepts you will need to know for the test. Although this test is not the only requirement for nursing school, it does test your aptitude to be a nurse, and preparing for the test ahead of time will help to show your school that you are a good fit for them.
The program consists of 33 credit hours, which can be earned in 18 months of part-time studies. Students can choose to prepare for work as a nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, nurse anesthetist or clinical nurse specialist. The extended education arm of Brandman University offers instruction in cutting-edge practices in health care focused both on professional and individual development.
While experience in adult critical care is required, employment time in neonatal and/or pediatric ICU is considered to be very advantageous and may count toward the minimum one-year critical care criterion. Other work history may be considered on a case-by-case basis, but must include experience in units where nurses care for high acuity, critically ill patients on a 1:1 ratio who require invasive monitoring and the administration of vasoactive drugs. For example, while it cannot supersede the critical care (ICU) requirement, Flight Nursing is considered highly complementary experience for applicants to the UT Knoxville Program.
Although many CRNAs have master’s degrees in nursing, the practice is evolving into requiring graduates to have even further training before licensure. Many schools are converting their programs to train nurse anesthetists at the doctoral level to fulfill potential future requirements as set forth by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.
Certifiedcritical-care nurses (CCRNs) validate their knowledge by passing a rigorous testand by meeting extensive continuing education and clinical experiencerequirements.
Nurse anesthetists have advanced degrees within nursing and receive licensure after graduating from school. Nursing schools that train students to become nurse anesthetists typically expect students to already have an undergraduate degree in nursing and to have some work experience as registered nurses. Admission requirements to a nurse anesthetist program may vary among schools but may include letters of reference, a personal interview, or an essay explaining your career goals. These requirements may be expected in conjunction with your previous work experience. You may also need certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) before being considered.
Programs are between 24 and 36 months in length and train students through classroom instruction, patient simulation labs, and practical experience. Graduates of the program will have achieved a master’s degree in nursing to become certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). Following graduation, you must take a licensing exam in order to practice. Some schools of nurse anesthesia may have a portion of class work dedicated to preparing for the exam to help students feel confident to pass the test and move into practice as CRNAs.
The primary clinical site for the program is the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, a 581-bed Acute Care Teaching Hospital and a Level-I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, which offers a wide range of clinical experiences to student registered nurse anesthetists. Additionally, the following clinical facilities are utilized for curricular enrichment and supplementation:
A nurse anesthetist is an advanced practice nurse who works to administer anesthesia and monitor pain control among patients who are having surgical procedures. Nurse anesthetists may practice independently or under the supervision of an anesthesiologist to give medications to induce anesthesia, provide an adequate patient airway, monitor patient vital signs, and perform procedures to control pain, such as an epidural block. They are most frequently found in institutions that perform medical procedures, such as hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, and medical clinics.
